a protected night sky
Normal highs in Tucson pass 100°F in June and July. Monsoon season runs June 15 to September 30, and storms often build in the afternoon with gusts over 40 mph. For outdoor events we plan shade for the gear, weighted stands and a set time to move inside.
Tucson and Pima County have limited outdoor light since the 1970s to protect nearby observatories. The code bans lasers aimed at the sky for outdoor shows, so patio lighting stays low and aimed down. Indoors, the ballroom can go full color. Cold sparks need a yes from the venue first.

Yes. We send our insurance certificate to your venue ahead of the date. At the same time we confirm load-in, power, sound limits, lighting and effects rules, so the plan fits the room. Every event also gets spare mics and a second mixer, so one failed part does not stop the night.
Can we have lasers or big lights at an outdoor event in Tucson?
Not lasers aimed at the sky. The shared Tucson and Pima County outdoor lighting code bans lasers and similar high-intensity light pointed above the horizon for outdoor entertainment. The code exists to keep the night sky dark for nearby observatories. For patios and lawns we keep lights low and aimed at the dance floor. Indoors, the room can have full color, uplighting and moving lights.
What happens if a monsoon storm hits our outdoor event?
Tucson's monsoon season runs June 15 to September 30. The National Weather Service says storms often build in the early to mid afternoon, with gusts that are usually over 40 mph, plus lightning. If your event is outside in those months, we agree on a move-inside plan and a decision time with your venue. Gear stays covered, and we follow the venue's weather plan.
Can you use cold sparks at a University of Arizona event?
Maybe. The University of Arizona requires a fire safety permit for open flame and pyrotechnics on campus, and only university staff can request one. Cold sparks are not open flame, but campus rules decide how they are treated. So we ask your campus host to check before we plan them. At resorts and other venues, we get the venue's written okay and ask whether the fire marshal needs to sign off.
Is Tucson Gem Show season a hard time to book?
It can be busy. The Tucson Gem, Mineral and Fossil Showcase runs more than 50 shows and events for nearly a month starting in late January, and the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show itself fills the Tucson Convention Center in mid February. If your gala, company party or birthday falls in that window, lock in your venue, hotel rooms and DJ early.
